St. Francis’ Class (Year 6)
Welcome back after the Easter break – myself and Mrs Davis hope that you had a relaxing couple of weeks away, whatever you did and wherever you went.
This is term 5 for Year 6 – it’s hard to believe that Year 6 will be leaving the school at the end of July! This half term will last for 6 weeks and will finish on Friday 25th May, returning for term 6 on Monday 4th June.
In English, we will create information leaflets about healthy eating, explore some thematic poetry and begin some persuasive writing. In Maths, we will complete geometry and review the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages. In Science, we will focus on animals and humans. We will investigate the circulatory and digestive systems and examine healthy lifestyles. We will complete our South America topic and begin to study the ancient civilization of Benin. PE this term covers cricket, and will take place outside on Monday afternoons. Please ensure that your children arrive at school on Monday mornings with their full PE kit.
The 2018 National Curriculum Assessments (also known as SATs) will begin the week beginning Monday 14th May.
Homework will be given out every Monday to be returned every Monday. Your child will receive 2 pieces of homework per week. Spellings are given out on a Monday and children are tested the following Monday.
A great iPhone/iPad app you can personalise by typing in their weekly spellings to make practising fun is:
Squeebles Spelling Test
Times tables are tested on Monday. Children should practise their times tables facts regularly at home in order to progress. At the end of Year 6 children must know all their times tables to 12 x 12.
A useful website for practise is: www.multiplication.com
There are also excellent iPad apps available such as:
Squeebles Times Tables
10 minute a day times tables.
Please listen to your child read frequently and please try to ensure that they read for 20 minutes every day. Thank you for your continued support with their spellings and times tables.
