Maths Curriculum Overview

“You have arranged all things by measure and number and weight.” â€“ Wisdom 11:20

Celebrating the order, beauty and wonder of God’s creation through mathematics.

At St Benedict’s, we want every child to enjoy and feel confident in mathematics. Our lessons are designed to spark curiosity, excitement and a love of learning, helping children see the beauty and purpose of maths in God’s world and in everyday life.

We encourage pupils to make meaningful links between what they already know, what they are learning, and how mathematics helps them to understand and shape the world around them. Our teaching develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, giving children the confidence to choose efficient strategies and apply them flexibly when tackling challenges and finding solutions in a range of contexts.

Children learn through a balance of practical, mental and written activities, supported by images and manipulatives that bring mathematical ideas to life. Through these experiences, pupils build strong number sense, resilience and independence. They are encouraged to explain their thinking, articulate their reasoning clearly, and use precise mathematical vocabulary to show depth of understanding.

Above all, we aim to nurture confident, reflective and enthusiastic mathematicians who see maths not just as numbers on a page, but as a creative, connected and essential part of life — a skill that empowers them to make a positive difference in the world.
